elodea cell

When the salt water flows under the slip and osmosis occurs, it diffuses, and spreads out, causing plasmolysis, the plant dehydrating. The cell wall doesn't collapse because the cell wall is rigid, and stays in place, while the rest shrivels up. Plants wilt when there is not enough water because the cells are shrivelling up, and so there is not as much support.
