Live Figure Drawing

Though it was harder to get a defined shape in some cases, I enjoyed the live drawing better than the observed drawings with the mannequins. I liked being able to have more detail to focus on, and while that did make it more challenging, I liked coming out of my comfort zone during this unit. I think I also liked the softer shapes and the more flowy elements to the drawings instead of always having the harsh lines of the mannequins. It added another element to the piece that I like drawing.

Something that I've struggled with during the whole figure drawing unit (live and still) is time management. I find I often get caught up in the small details and the contour line, leaving me with not much time for completing the shading and finishing touches. I'd love to sit down and have an extended period of time to do an observed drawing, and I'm sure that after this taste of the style that this is something I will try at home. I hope practicing will also give me a better sense of detail and thus help with my time management.

During these four drawings, I never used the Prismacolour markers, as I struggled with those in the past. Blending was hard and often made my work look clunky and unnatural. However, I do really like the look that others achieved with the medium. One medium I would like to learn to use better is the rapidograph pens. I love how you can achieve so many different looks and styles with the pens, and so I'd love to be able to keep using those. Overall, I did find that I am currently most comfortable with is oil pastel and pencil. With oil pastel, my biggest struggle was with the shading as it was too easy for me to make some areas too dark (like in the sleeve in the right drawing). Throughout the year, I've found that pencil is my strongest medium, so I tried it in this unit. I still think it was my strongest, and though I thought it might take longer to fill in the details, it didn't take as long as I thought.

Overall, I liked this unit. I found it enjoyable, even when challenges arose. I look forward to practising at home and working more with different mediums, such as the rapidographs.
